A black bear was on cloud nine Sunday after breaking into a commercial kitchen at the Aspen Business Center and devouring a panful of freshly baked brownies.
The bruin clawed a hole through the door at Cloud Nine Brownies and chowed down an entire pan of the chewy treats - 48 brownies' worth - and clawed a couple of other pans in the rack before apparently deciding he'd had his fill. Left untouched were bags of chocolate and a bucket of sugar in the kitchen.
"Our tag line could be, 'Endorsed by local wildlife,'" joked Jill Pomeroy, who owns the business with her husband, Jim.
The Pomeroys got a call from a neighbor in the business center Sunday morning. Apparently, the main door to the building had been left open. The bear wandered in and made quick work of the inner door to Cloud Nine, which was nothing more than particle board with cardboard bracing inside.
"Hopefully, they'll put a much more stable door on here," Jim said.
A bag of garbage outside may have been left atop a nearby trash bin, luring the bear to the area in the first place.
The Pomeroys sell their six varieties of brownies at the Aspen Saturday Market, at The Cheese Shop and online. Jill baked 800 brownies last week.
